During world war two Dover people sheltering in the caves became like small communities, where they would have their own position in the cave with their fiends. Mr Bates who lived in Market Street said that he would always go with his mother to East Cliff Cave, later in the war they moved to Buckland Estate which is over a mile from East Cliff. His mother would still go to East Cliff Cave because all her friends were there, they would past all the other Air raid shelters on the way if they were not quick enough they would be told off by the Wardens. On one occasion whilst heading for East Cliff they got as far as Castle Street when a German plane came diving down above them. They ran for cover under some cars that were parked in the garage on the corner of Castle Street a warden spotted them and shouted for them to get out pointing at the petrol pumps.
