World War 1
Dover Volunteers
In September 1914 after the war had been for about four
weeks in progress, and after one or two efforts to form organizations
for drilling men had been mooted, it occurred to some patriotic residents
of Dover that a town effort in support of the naval and military authorities
would be desirable which, while it would in some slight degree be of
service to the heads of the fighting forces would also afford an opportunity
for many who for various good reasons were unable to enlist. But who
were anxious to place their services at the disposal of the Country,
to do something for the Crown. His Worship the Mayor, E. W. T. Parley
J.P readily placed himself at the head of this movement and a Committee
meeting was arranged, for which the patronage of the General Officer
Commanding Brigadier-General Crampton, R.A. was sought.
